Alice Udvari-Solner, Ph.D., is a national consultant in education and holds a joint appointment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison between the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the Office of Education Outreach. The graduate and undergraduate courses she teachers on the topic of accommodating diverse learners in general education settings are integral to the elementary, secondary and special education teacher certification programs. Differentiation, the design of effective curricular adaptations, collaborative teamwork among educators and paraprofessionals, and systems change toward inclusive education are key areas that are central to her research and teaching.

Morning Session: A Universal Design Process for Differentiation:

Redrawing the Lines in the Sand

Our classrooms are comprised of students who differ greatly in their learning abilities and needs.  It only follows that the techniques of teaching be as varied as those learners, with multiple avenues for students to access the content, process, and products of learning.  Too often a “one-size-fits-all” approach is used to design lessons leaving some learners struggling to participate and leaving teachers feeling they have not reached all of their students.  In this session, participants are offered a process of differentiating lessons that can be used across age levels and subject areas.  The Universal Design Process resulted from a four year investigation that examined teacher thinking in the development of inclusive lessons.

Participants will be actively involved in generating effective strategies for diverse learners through video analysis and interactive activities.  Numerous active, collaborative, and brain-compatible approaches for differentiating instruction will be demonstrated throughout the workshop.  Participants will have the opportunity to apply these techniques to their own instructional context and consider specific students in implementation.

Afternoon Session:  Creating Change in Schools:

Building a Social Movement for Inclusive and Collaborative Practice

How does change occur? How can we as individuals take and active part in moving forward innovative practices in our schools?  This session will focus on the power we hold as individuals to act as change agents in our school communities and encourage us to “be the change we wish to see in the world.”
